Our founder and owner, Craig Mathews, was born and raised in Southern Ohio. From childhood, the idea of weightlessness and dreams of escaping gravity pushed him to investigate being an astronaut. The first step in training is learning to control one’s body in a swimming pool— so young Craig signed up for his first scuba diving class, hoping to experience the same phenomenon of floating that space men might while outside the atmosphere. However, a captivation with diving and being underwater changed his path from above the Earth to below it. In 2011, he moved to Preble County near a hidden gem of a dive site. Unfortunately, the closest dive shops were in Cincinnati or Dayton, so giving the public access to the nearby diving areas was next to impossible. This necessity paired with Craig’s love of diving spun into a partnership with Miami University and created Oxford Scuba in March of 2015. This fortuitous sequence of events has brought the enjoyment of SCUBA diving to the land-locked southwest Ohio region where anyone can become certified, refresh their skills or dabble in the one-of-a-kind water sport that is SCUBA. Currently, Oxford Scuba is located in the Miami University Rec Center at 750 South Oak Street, Oxford, Ohio 45056. A full service dive center will be available in the near future.
